Council Adopts Public Participation Policy

Public Participation Policy

Council approved a Public Participation Policy during its regular meeting June 4, which establishes guidelines, tools and processes to ensure consistent, ongoing conversations with the public.


“The City recognizes the rights of the public to participate in the development of their community and the policy creates clear expectations about when to have conversations with citizens,” said CAO Alan Martens. “Being mindful of the best interests of the community as a whole, this policy reflects the important role citizens play in the local government decision making process.”


The policy identifies the responsibilities of Council and administration, as well as public participation opportunities and policy expectations. This includes identifying how and when the City will engage local citizens and that Council must evaluate the policy at least once every four years.


The new changes to the Municipal Government Act requires Council adopt a Public Participate Policy by July 23, 2018.
