Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (F.O.I.P.)
The Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act aims to strike a balance between the public's right to know and the individual's right to privacy, as these rights relate to information held by public bodies. This law, proclaimed October 1, 1995, affects all provincial departments, agencies, boards and commissions. This legislation was proclaimed October 1, 1999 for municipalities.
The Act protects municipal customers where personal information is not releasable without the consent of the customer and includes personal addresses, names and phone numbers. The City of Brooks’ policy is not to release this information to any person without consent from the customer, unless the FOIP Act permits disclosure in certain circumstances.
