The City of Books is required by legislation to collect education taxes on behalf of the Provincial Government. Education property taxes support an education system that is producing the workforce of tomorrow. All Albertans benefit from a quality education system - whether or not they have children in school. Land owners must pay education taxes on property owned in every municipality in the Province.
Do seniors have to pay Education Property Taxes?
Yes. Seniors who own property must pay education property taxes. The provincial Education Property Tax Assistance program provides an annual rebate to senior homeowners who have an increase in the education portion of their property taxes. The Government of Alberta also provides financial assistance to low-income seniors through the Alberta Seniors Benefit.
