2021 Mural Project

2021 Mural Project Twitter

Brooks – The City of Brooks is seeking local businesses/facility owners and artists to be a part of the 2021 Mural Project. Murals, defined as works of art painted or applied directly to walls, will help add vibrancy to our community by activating public spaces, promoting community expression and deterring graffiti vandalism. It is preferred that the murals be designed to be interactive so that people can take photos with the mural and be part of the art.

The theme for the murals will be “Community Values” and three murals will be commissioned, and each mural will be based on a different value. The murals will need to communicate this message and be installed in 2021.

Facility owners and artists interested in this project are asked to submit an application to be considered for inclusion in the mural project. A letter indicating the facility owners interest in the project is all that is required. Facilities must be within the City of Brooks boundaries.

Artists must be local and supply their own materials and necessary equipment/tools. The artist must have experience in creating outdoor murals and provide examples and references. They must also have WCB coverage, liability insurance, experience in working at heights, fall protection training and comply with the City of Brooks Contractor Safety Program.

Selected artists will be matched with facility owners who are interested in enhancing their buildings with exterior murals. Please note, this is a request for qualifications only and no specific artwork proposals are required at this stage. Application packages should include:

• A letter indicating the artist’s interest in community art as well as an indication of artistic qualifications (i.e. art training, previous experience with community-based public art projects);

• An artist’s resume, if available; and,

• Five images demonstrating previous work relevant to community based public art projects. Please provide high resolution, labelled images as these will be shared with potential project partners.

Assessment will be based upon the quality of the artist’s previous work as well as previous experience. All qualified artists have an equal opportunity to be selected, however, only one artist is guaranteed the contract for this project.

Applications should be submitted electronically to Jessica Surgenor, Manager of Community Development at Please indicate “Mural Project” in the subject line. Only electronic submissions will be accepted, and all documents must be sent in PDF format as one combined, attached document. Deadline for submissions is April 16, 2021.
